Brother George Haegele SVD, 75, who worked in accounting and business administration for the Society of the Divine Word for decades, passed away on Dec. 3 at Techny, Ill.
Brother George, who was born in Chicago in 1947, grew up in St. Sabina parish on the city’s Southside. He was the eldest of Frances (nee Herold) and Arwed Haegele’s three sons. He professed first vows in 1968 and perpetual vows in 1974.
Brother George studied theology at Divine Word College in Epworth, Iowa; earned a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Loras College in Dubuque; and a master’s degree in Business Administration from Notre Dame University.
He served as treasurer for Divine Word Seminary in Perrysburg, Ohio; business manager for the Divine Word community in Pittsburgh; and treasurer for the Society of the Divine Word New Jersey District.
He worked as a bookkeeper for the Divine Word Missionaries at Bordentown, N.J., and in pastoral care in East Troy, Wis. He also served as chairman of the Society of the Divine Word Chicago Province Budget Committee and as a member of the province’s Finance Committee.
Brother George moved to Techny in retirement in 2017.
He was the beloved son of the late Arwed and Frances Haegele; dear brother of Raymond (Jane) Haegele and Robert (Janet) Haegele; cherished uncle of Maureen Haegele, Lisa (Christopher) Brodowski, Loren (William) Lareau, Amy (Reid) Bowers, Jeanne Haegele, Robert Haegele Jr.; proud great uncle of Sebastian, Finley, Macklyn and Lennox Brodowski, Benjamin, Evelyn and Max Lareau, and Julian and August Bowers; and loved by many cousins and friends.
His wake will be Monday, Dec. 12, at 9 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of the Divine Word Residence. He will be buried in St. Mary Cemetery at Techny.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in the name of Brother George Haegele can be made for the care of elderly and infirm missionaries and sent to The Rector, Divine Word Residence, 1901 Waukegan Road, P.O. Box 6000, Techny, IL 60082-6000.
