Father Francis W. Mahon, 1911-2007
Father Francis W. Mahon passed into eternity on Feb. 3, 2007. He was 96 years old. He was the son of the late Michael and Mary (Brennan) Mahon, brother of the late Mrs. Ann Coakley of Elizabeth, N.J.; Stephen Mahon of Williamstown, N.J.; Leo Mahon of Elizabeth, N.J.; Sarah Mahon of Elizabeth, N.J.; and Michael T. Murray of Point Pleasant, N.J.
He was the uncle and great uncle of many nephews and nieces. Father Mahon was born and raised in Elizabeth, N.J., entered the Society of the Divine Word in the late 1920s, professed his religious vows in 1935 and was ordained to the priesthood on Aug. 15, 1040 in Techny, Ill.
His assignments were to the various Divine Word Missionary communities in Erie, Penn.; Conesus, N.Y.; Pittsburgh, Penn.; and Bordentown, N.J. In each of these areas, he was pastorally active in the various ministries of the Divine Word community. His last assignment was to the Bordentown Divine Word community, where he spent some 32 years in residence as the treasurer of the community.
Father Mahon retired from active pastoral ministry when he was 88 years old. He enjoyed the past years of peace and calm with the Bordentown community. During the last two years of his life, he resided at the St. Lawrence Rehabilitation Center in Lawrenceville, N.J.
Visitation will be Wed., Feb. 7, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Divine Word Chapel, 101 Park St., Bordentown. A prayer service will begin at 7:30 p.m. An additional visitation will take place on Thursday, Feb. 8 from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church. A concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, Feb. 8, at 11 a.m. in St. Mary.
The church is located at 45 Crosswicks St., Bordentown, N.J. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Memorials may be made to Divine Word Missionaries, 101 Park St., Bordentown, N.J., 08505.
